Many in the human resource community recognize the need to optimize recruitment websites for mobile devices. Virtual recruitment continues to evolve, shifting from job boards to social media and mobile solutions. However, it’s necessary to understand how job seekers really do look for work to reach them where they really are. A recent survey by digital recruitment advertiser HireClix found 94 percent of prospective new employees still tend to use their computers for the job search instead of employing portable devices.
This figure does not obviate the importance of mobile recruitment, however. Nearly two-thirds of respondents overall were likely to use their phone, while 68 percent of those over 45 were likely to do so. This showcases how vital it is for all recruiters and firms to optimize their recruitment process for mobile devices and the candidates who use them. Interestingly, it seems to be marginally more important to do so for candidates who are older, as more mature job seekers use their smartphone to search for open positions. This demonstrates mobile optimization isn’t only a concern in recruiting and hiring millennial talent. Half of all respondents said they wouldn’t use their tablet, which indicates precisely which kinds of devices should be top priority in optimization efforts.

A mere 30 percent of those surveyed would look in newspapers, magazines and more traditional mediums. The trade journals of yesterday appear to have lost their utility as recruiting tools, perhaps replaced by industry-specific job boards, communities and websites.
These findings may point to coming changes in recruiting budgets for companies and staffing professionals. While virtual recruitment through computers is still a huge market, the mobile market continues to grow. Additionally, traditional-media job listings may be less valuable now than ever before. Recognizing and addressing these trends can make a significant difference in sourcing top talent.
