Take Action to Retain Top Talent

employee developmentThe No.1 concern in the human resource community is retaining high-performing employees, according to the The Talent Management Challenges in an Era of Uncertainty survey recently conducted by Right Management. Finding top candidates during the recruitment process can be difficult, and HR professionals may want to foster staff development to prevent employee turnover. However, the lack of potential leaders in the workplace continues to worry many recruiters.

Right Management, a talent management division of Manpower Group, polled more than 2,000 HR executives in 14 countries about their employee development and management plans throughout the rest of 2013. Globally, about 25 percent of respondents reported their biggest concern is retaining top workers to develop their skills for becoming company leaders.

Only 4 percent of the 650 U.S. executives said they feel comfortable with their talent pipeline. Of all the countries surveyed, the U.S. was last for cultivating high-performing workers. Eighty-five percent said they rely on both internal talent development and external recruitment to fill open positions.

Understanding the Issue
Gerald Purgay, senior vice president for Right Management, said there remains a lack of cohesion within companies about investing in employee education and growth.

“HR professionals know that it is increasingly difficult to find and recruit top people whether in a weak or strong job market, and varies according to level, industry, requisite skills and geography,” Purgay said. “Despite the differences by country the findings suggest the challenge is a global one … preparing for management succession and building the needed bench strength.”

Implementing a staff development program continues to be an effective way for HR professionals to identify high-performing workers and foster their advancement in the company. Instituting an initiative to foster employee skills can help recruiters retain top talent and prevent a long recruitment process.
