Game Changers come to play: Nominate your All-Star

Roughly more than a decade ago, if you mentioned to a layman your job involved managing a contingent workforce, you would probably have been met with a blank stare. To be fair, even within your company, the reaction would probably have been the same. Once referred to as pioneers in an emerging field, the contingent workforce management profession has come a long way. In 2003, only 16% of CW managers spent most of their time on contingent issues, according to SIA data. In 2019, our research indicated 76% spent at least 50% of their time on contingent issues with 45% spending 100% of their time on contingent issues.

Today, we have a role, complete with a career path, and the respect of the C-suite.

It has taken a recession, technology advances, digital advances and the expectations of Gens Y and Z to change the way we work. Blended workforces — a mix of employees and contingents — are in and need to be managed. Today’s CW managers are gaining recognition and appreciation in the boardroom. And we called it first — and we honored them first in our CW Program Game Changers list. Launched two years ago, we’ve had the pleasure of profiling some of the most innovative programs in the market. These professionals have helped elevate temporary work while providing their companies resources to fill gaps and supply expert resources to get the job done.

It gives my team and me great pleasure to begin the process anew for the next round of Game Changers honorees. The 2020 list is sponsored by KellyOCG. We don’t yet know who will be on the list — our nominations open today — but we know at least one underlying theme will be the work they have been doing amid Covid-19. We’ve been hearing numerous tales of CW managers working tirelessly to help contingent workers shift to remote work. Some helped organize large-scale efforts to drop off computers at contingent workers’ residences. Another went above and beyond to creating a database of people that were to be laid off or furloughed and then looking for skills gaps in other areas of the business that these resources could fill.

How work gets done globally has changed drastically in just the past few months, and contingent workforce managers are leading the charge. This is your opportunity to honor those professionals who are shaping the world of work. We welcome nominations from all corners of the ecosystem. There is no limit on the number of nominations that you can make, either.

SIA looks for individuals — buyers of staffing services — making a significant contribution to the management and evolution of contingent workforce programs within their organizations and industry-wide. Appointment to the 2020 list will be made based on the impact and influence these nominees have had on the profession and on the roles they play in engaging and elevating the value of the flexible workforce. These are trying times, but one thing is certain: The ecosystem has an abundance of professionals who are making significant contributions to their organizations and the ecosystem at large. They toil tirelessly to ensure a smoothly running program that supports the businesses’ projects and objectives, delivering quality talent while minimizing costs and risks. They’ve proven their value, and that of the CW program management career.
