Leading the Path Forward Through the Disruption

Disruption provides opportunity even amidst adversity. Leaders have been faced with unprecedented change to their businesses in a very short period of time. The adjustments have been enormous. Operating models have been broken. Strategies have been put on hold, modified, or thrown out completely. Some leaders have been humbled and new leaders have risen. It has been chaotic, challenging and unsettling to say the least.

There is an old Sufi saying that states, “When the ego weeps for what it has lost, the spirit rejoices for what it has found.” I think this is the opportunity presented to us right now us as leaders.

Leaders are looking for a path forward through the disruption. This will take reflection and focus. Each business and organization will have numerous examples of “what has been found,” but we must purposefully look for and identify these new examples of hope, and mobilize action around them. We cannot hold onto the past and wait it out until things go back to normal. There is no normal anymore, but there is plenty of new normal. These are the opportunities for us as leaders to build on.

As strange as it sounds, we have been given an opportunity by this disruption: an opportunity to go deep into the belly of our businesses/organizations and re-evaluate the very core of our offerings in light of the changes around us.

The work before us is to:

  • Reframe
  • Refocus and
  • Rebuild

This is not easy work, but it is important and necessary work. We have the time to do it and we are called upon as leaders to move forward. Luckily, we do not have to work alone. We need to work both with our teams and our stakeholders.

I encourage you to take the time to do this deep work. You can rebuild and transform your organization and even yourself as a leader. There is a lot of support available.  If you are interested in utilizing a coach, now is a great time to do so.
