Naughty or Nice? Retaining Your Staff Should Be High on Your Christmas List!

holiday-listOh the joy of the holidays! In the midst of the parties and presents, time off and trimmings, the most valuable (yet unacknowledged) gift a leader can “receive” is to retain their engaged, knowledgeable team members.

When CareerBuilder predicted in January of 2014 that 21 percent of US full-time employees would change jobs this year, employers knew the hunt had started in earnest. In November, Joberate announced the result of a recent analysis of job seeker behavior data. The data indicated that over the prior 90 days, 12.1 percent of working Americans were actively seeking new job opportunities, up from 8.2 percent over the previous 90 days. Employees are looking!

So while the cookies are baking and the stockings are being hung, you can safely assume (and wisely anticipate) that some of your employees (gasp!) will be searching. Your competitors will be spray painting their grass “greener” in an attempt to get your best people to jump the fence. What strategic steps should you take to make sure “there’s no place like home” in the eyes of your team members?

  1. Be nice. None of your employees should leave for break without hearing from you, personally, that their work is appreciated and their time off is well-deserved. Bring on the warm fuzzies, and secure their rose-colored glasses before they leave the hallowed halls of your company and look elsewhere.
  2. Be spontaneous. Do something completely unexpected that “wows” them with well-deserved praise! Write a note bragging on their accomplishments to their spouses/significant others/parents and mail it. Make your employee (and consequentially your company) the buzz of the holiday dinner table.
  3. Be generous. If you’ve had a good year, share it! Your team made it happen, so deliver “over and above” what they are expecting. If you give gifts, personalize them! With all the retail magic available at your fingertips, take the time to deliver something special — from personalized stationery to crazy favorite sports team socks.

In the midst of the jingle and jangle of your holiday shopping, remember that your team members may also be shopping — for a new, improved employer. Stay off their “naughty” list.
